Rehabilitation’ is defined as, “a set of interventions designed to optimize functioning and reduce disability in individuals with health conditions in interaction with their environment”

  • It is restoration of ability to function.
  • It is to support an addict to achieve maximum function and independence.

WHO defines rehabilitation as,

” The combines and co-ordinated use of Medical, Social, Educational, and Vocational measures for Training the individual to the highest level of functional ability”.

Drug rehabilitation is the process of medical or psychotherapeutic treatment for dependency on psycho-active substances such as alcohol, prescription drugs, and street drugs such as cannabis, cocaine, heroin or amphetamines etc.

  • The general intent is to enable the patient to confront substance dependence.
  • Drug rehabilitation programs involve programs that are designed to make an addict free from addiction of alcohol and street drugs.
  • Counselling programs are designed to know the underlying cause behind a person becoming an addict.
  • Treatment includes medication for depression or other disorders, counselling by experts and sharing of experience with other addicts

Treatment can be a long process and the duration is dependent upon the patient’s needs and history of substance use. Research has shown that most patients need at least three months of treatment and longer durations are associated with better outcomes.-

  • Traditional addiction treatment is based primarily on counselling.
  • Rehabilitation helps to create positive thinking in the addict.
  • Educates the addicts about the risk factors due to addiction and improving their quality of life.
  • Educates the person about various side effects of drug abuse and how it impacts one’s social, professional, physical and personnel life.
